SlovakiaBrief information about the country Official name of the country: Slovak Republic Location: Slovakia is a state in Central Europe. It does not have an output to the sea. It borders on Czech in the northwest, on Poland in the north, on Ukraine in the east, on Hungary in the south and Austria in a southwest. Total area: 49 thousand sq. km. Population: 5447502 (in the beginning of 2007). The majority of Slovakian residents are ethnic Slovaks (86 %). Hungarians are the greatest minority (10 %). They live basically in southern and east regions of the country. Other ethnic groups include gipsy, Czech, Ukrains, Germans and Poles. Climate: moderate with rather cool summer and cold, cloudy, damp winter. In the coldest month, January, night temperature is about 10-15 degrees lower than zero, and in July the warmest month the temperature maximum is +32 degrees in the afternoon. State language: Slovak. Capital: Bratislava Large cities: Bratislava, Koshice, Preshov, Zhilin, Banska Bystrica. Resorts: the most visited resort of Slovakia is Bardeevskii Kupeli. Another world famous resort- city in the country -Pijashtini, in 80 kms from Bratislava. Resort Smokovci is the oldest in Slovakia. The best high-mountainous resort – Shtrebske Pleso. It is located on coast of the same named mountain lake. The best conditions for mountain skiing in Slovakia are offered by mountain-skiing center Jasna.
Political system: parliamentary republic. The head of the state in Slovakia is the president, elected by general direct vote for 5-years term. The most part of executive functions is assigned on the head of the government - the prime minister. Slovakia is one of the youngest states in Europe. Almost three quarters of a century it was a part of Czechoslovakia, and before that it was a part of Hungarian state. Slovakia became a member of European Union on May, 2004. Country has entered NATO on March, 29, 2004. In 1993 it also entered the Council of Europe. On January, 1, 2007 Slovakia will join the Schengen agreement. On January, 1, 2009 the country will enter Euro zone. Monetary unit: Slovak crone, 1 crone = 0,03 euros (for June 2007). Airports (how to get): There is an international airport in Bratislava. But at present direct flights from Moscow to Bratislava are not present. The nearest international airport where it is possible to get from Moscow is in Vienna. Bratislava is in 70 kms. Being in Slovakia, it is possible to hire an automobile or to take a bus, whose routes run in all countries next to republic. Religion: basically Catholic - 60 %.
